HEALTHY MOUTH…HEALTHY BODY

Pediatric Dental Disease is America’s most common chronic childhood illness. Despite parent’s best efforts, 60% of children will have a cavity or filling between the ages of five to nine. Mouth problems can affect your child’s overall health and development. Cavities, gum disease, and other mouth conditions can cause millions of children pain so severe that it interferes with their ability to eat, sleep and learn, communicate and thrive. Dr. Santos-Cordero often works with pediatricians and other healthcare specialists to ensure your child stays in total health.

PREVENTIVE DENTAL CARE LOWERS RISK

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that a child be established with a pediatric dentist by age one, or when as soon as the first tooth appears. Twice a year preventive dentistry appointments can help your child’s mouth remain healthy and happy as they grow and develop. Routine pediatric dental exams are important for both you and your child since we will help inform and instruct both of you on good at-home oral hygiene, ways to help prevent tooth decay and any growth and development concerns. Between appointments, be sure to regularly examine your child’s mouth for any signs of decay or disease, including red, swollen, or bleeding gums, receding gums, or chronic bad breath. Helping your child develop good habits can safeguard their smile for years to come.

PREVENT TOOTH DECAY WITH SEALANTS

A child who receives a dental sealant is 80 percent less likely to develop a cavity on the chewing surfaces of that tooth. We recommend sealants on permanent molars to protect the chewing teeth from the acid attack of food and plaque build-up when the teeth are most vulnerable. Sealants are a clear or tooth-colored liquid that is painted onto the ridges and grooves of teeth to seal deeper areas prone to cavities. Along with limiting sugar and starch intake, especially during snacking, protecting teeth with sealants can help reduce the chances of decay. Better yet, this treatment is fast and painless!

A PROACTIVE, PREVENTIVE APPROACH TO DENTISTRY

Dr. Santos-Cordero believes in taking a preventive approach to dentistry, and we dedicate time to educate you and your child about ways to maintain and improve oral health. Because each child is unique, we customize comprehensive preventive and treatment solutions to fit your child’s specific oral health needs. Early detection of potential problems can prevent the need for more extensive and expensive care often required when problems have gone unrecognized and/or untreated.
